Dear GreenCareerInfosm,
I am having a very hard time preparing mentally for conducting a career
search in the green industry. Are there any tips you could offer to help me “get my head” together before I invest time?

Dear M.P.,
The issue you pose is probably one of the most difficult aspects for the job
seeker, especially those who are currently employed or about to graduate from college and does not have a lot of time to prepare for an interview.
I have found that if you have your thoughts organized and have thoroughly researched employers and their respective opportunities, you are more than halfway there. In addition, you may want to set up a checklist to make sure you have covered all of the bases. Here’s a sample checklist you may wish to consider which can also be considered a “mental mantra.”
Personal Checklist for a Job Search in the Green Industry:
- My career objective is clearly stated and able to be understood.
- I am prepared to discuss all aspects of my education including a rationale for the courses I decided to pursue.
- My experience has been carefully analyzed and documented so that an interviewer sees a well-defined link between it and the position I am seeking.
- I am staying focused on the long-term career opportunity this industry provides.
- I know that this is a physically demanding business and have no illusions that I can bypass this and still have a successful career in this industry.
- I recognize that many companies have career paths that start at the bottom. I am ready to adjust to this and work my way up commensurate with my abilities and the opportunities presented me.
- I review my written communications with any company very carefully. I am looking for ways to grab the attention of the reader and differentiate my credentials from others.
- My appearance during an interview is appropriate and I have verified this prior to any meeting.
- I will get the correct name, title and address of each person I interview with so that I can send a personal thank you letter to them.
Hope this helps with you pursuit of a green industry career.
Best regards, GreenCareerInfosm
